What is Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM)?

Perinatology, also known as Maternal Fetal medicine (MFM) is a specialty which blends obstetrics and fetal medicine focusing on the care of both mother and fetus throughout a high-risk pregnancy.

MFM specialists have training specific to pregnancies complicated by factors such as maternal health conditions, fetal abnormalities, multiplies (twins, triplets, etc.) and other complex issues.

The CDC Maternal Fetal Medicine unit is an integrated outpatient consultative and ultrasound program which offers care to patients in Calgary through our Pacific Place clinic. The CDC MFM service is led by Dr. Titilayo Oluyomi and focuses on ultrasound diagnosis, assessment and surveillance of fetal anomalies in collaboration with other subspecialists as needed. We perform assessment of complicated pregnancies in collaboration with obstetricians, radiologists, family physicians, midwives, prenatal genetics, pediatric surgeons, pediatric urologists, neonatologists and many other providers. Care is provided to patients in a collaborative model with experienced Registered Nurses, diagnostic medical sonographers while consulting with their multidisciplinary team.

Who Needs MFM?

Fetal ultrasound services are offered to those with, or caring for, patients experiencing high-risk pregnancies due to fetal or maternal complications. Conditions include complex fetal anomalies, multiple gestations, hypertension, diabetes and autoimmune diseases. Our team strives to support antenatal care providers and their patients in a collaborative approach while also connecting them with relevant subspecialties (like pediatric urology, prenatal genetics, fetal echo specialist, pediatric surgery and others).

Referring to our MFM Clinic

MFM is a specialty clinic and therefore we have a MFM Obstetrical nurses that work with the perinatologist to triage patients for appointments that meet the needs of the patient based on their clinical history, immediate pregnancy care needs, fetal diagnosis and gestational age.

  • Referrals - Patients can be referred to MFM directly from their primary pregnancy care provider using a CDC requisition (see link).  We ask that all relevant medical and pregnancy related information and concerns be outlined on the requisition.

* CDC radiologists work closely with our highly skilled obstetrical sonographers to identify any patients that require specialized MFM consultation and care. Once the need for further investigation is discussed with the patient, an MFM nurse and perinatologist triage the patient. Based on current pregnancy findings and obstetrical history, our team will ensure the patient has access to the specialty services and supports that MFM can offer throughout their pregnancy.
